Visual Identity
Overview
The first phase of this project consisted of surveying elements, patterns, color palettes, typography, textures, among others to develop a visual identity of an iconic area of an area that I knew very well. The second phase was to transform these elements into 2D visual communication elements. The final phase was based on creating the entire visual identity, from the logo to the merchandise.
Goals
The objectives of this academic project/exercise were: to learn and understand key concepts of Identity Design; identify the communication potential from a real context; apply visual communication concepts and understand visual design comprehensively.
Idea
Being able to develop this project based on an area that I know very well was an advantage, I chose the “Mina de São Domingos” area in Alentejo (Portugal), which contains the “Achado do Gamo”, which is an abandoned mine, this would be a great area tourist destination, where people could learn a little about local history, as it was thanks to this mine that some villages and towns developed.
Logo
Starting by surveying the elements, I arrived at one of the buildings that is part of the mine, this building was a locomotive maintenance workshop, it contained the ideal shapes for creating a visual identity. In this case, by deconstructing the facade of this iconic building, we managed to arrive at the main logo, always following the line and curvature of the facade. We managed to define a main element and from there it was easier to create icons, patterns and even a typographic font.
Colors
The color palette was taken from the characteristic color of the mine's lakes. Between 1864 and 1966, these lakes served as an ore cleaning area, which is why their color is orange.
Pattern
These patterns were created to help define a consistent visual identity, creating recognition.
Mockups
Mockups are essential, as we can visualize how the elements will be applied in different contexts and materials. They served to create realistic representations of the brand's possible products. Mockups were used to help create a consistent and attractive visual identity from various points of view.
